The Refusal

Common Cavern
Monaco Bay Weyr - Common Caverns
A grand stairway leads downward into the cool rock of the commons cavern, a place for socializing and relaxing, as well as an area that provides solid shelter from the seasonal storms of this area. One of the few caverns at Monaco Bay Weyr, the rock here has been worn away by centuries worth of water movement, leaving a nearly glass smooth polish over much of the room. Rocky shelves line the walls on which electric lights covered with paper lanterns rest, providing adequate illumination for the area. High above are further light fixtures, enabling a wide range of lighting options here. A natural pool occupies half of the far end of the cavern and is supplied with heated water piped in by an ingenious techcrafter. All about the room are balconies of rock with stairs leading to them and small dumbwaiters for the purpose of delivering food and drink to their heights.

It is between shifts for the kitchen staff. Most people have gone on about their work. In the background voices can be heard from the kitchen, the occasional clash of a metal pan on pan. One white-knotted candidate sits with her head down over a diagram oblivious to the world as she learns the anatomy of dragonkind. Perched on her shoulder, oblivious to Cinnitha's studies a little green, her hide glistening from a recent oiling nests in her auburn curls which are coming undone from her thick braid. The young woman unconsciously taps a finger as she reads.

The noises from the kitchen lessen slightly ask at least one Baker Crafter is released from her duties for the time being.Taeleens walks out from the kitchens only to stop in her tracks when she sees Cinnitha. she hesitates for a moment, the look on her face almost that of aherdbeast who stumbled into a dragon's weyr, then swallows, getting her confidence together. slowly, quietly, she walks up behind her friend, being very quiet, but not intentionally trying to sneak up on the auburn haired Healer. "Cinni," she says, tentatively, a bit nervous about this particular encounter.

One of the many nice things about having bonded with a firelizard is that they are early warning systems. Cinnitha does not startle and turns with a quiet smile for her friend. "How goes it, Taeleena?"
Taeleenasmiles, as she moves to pull out a chair. "Hi, Cinni. I'm not interrupting, I hope." While she's smiling, it's obvious that she does have something on her mind.

"This," she says tapping the page of the open book, "is fascinating but I think I have been at it for much too long. Time for a sneak to the beach. What's up?"

Taeleena looks down, flushing a bright pink. "Cinni, how long has it been since we first met? About a month?" she takes a deep breath. " I have something that I need to tell you. But at the same time I'm scared to." the pretty Baker fidgets nervously in her chair, reflecting the obvious turmoil within her…

"Only a month is it. It seems…" the young woman stops mid-sentence when she catches her friend's discomfort, Merida stares at Taeleena and squeeks once. "Are you alright?"

Taeleena takes another deep breath. "Cinni, I….I know it's only been a short time that we've known each other, but I think…" She looks down again, afraid, it seems, to meet your gaze. "I think I love you." she looks up at you with that heard beast in the dragon's gaze expression again.

The young woman pales and then flushes looking away from Taeleena. The little green croons sadly, reacting to something between her and Cinnitha. Real distress brings tears to Cinnitha's eyes but when she turns her gaze to Taeleena, she gives, what she imagines will make Taeleena shudder, a look of sorrow and pity. Shaking her head once, she sighs looking for the right words to comfort her friend and mitigate the pain that she will so unjustly (love is not always just) deal her.

"You are my friend and I treasure that, Taeleena. It is my great fortune that you have been here to help me adjust to returning home though you are out-Weyr yourself. But I don't share your feeling of love, not if it is a love beyond friendship. Not now. I know you for a deeply good person in many ways but it is not my time to love, I think. I am so sorry."
